<span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">I’m so happy to be a part of the <b>Marjorie Release Blog Tour</b>! <b>Hazel & Gather</b> is a brand new pattern company whose patterns can be found at the <a href="https://doitbetteryourself.club/product/marjorie-dress-swing-dress-sewing-pattern/">Do It Better Yourself Club</a>. I had the opportunity to test drive this pattern just before its release. With lots of neckline and sleeve options, it’s sure to be the staple swing dress in your closet! This tutorial will give you one more sleeve option to add to the mix.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; white-space: pre-wrap;">One trend I’ve seen all over fashion this fall are <a href="http://www.whowhatwear.com/how-to-wear-bell-sleeve-top/slide9" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">bell sleeves</a>! I love how flowy and feminine bell sleeves are. They can be dramatic, with tons of volume. You can wear them with a jacket, or dress them down for the weekend. Whether you are a confident beginner or seasoned seamstress, you can learn to draft and sew your own bell sleeves. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Today I will show you how easy it is to draft bell sleeves using the recently released <a href="https://doitbetteryourself.club/product/marjorie-dress-swing-dress-sewing-pattern/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Marjorie Dress Pattern</a> by Hazel & Gather. (If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there is a quick pattern review with the links to the other posts on the blog tour.)</span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit; white-space: pre-wrap;">You will need to decide where to end your sleeve. If you’re not sure, search some google images for inspiration. There are seriously so many options! If you’re feeling ambitious, you could even try a 2 tiered bell sleeve! I wanted my sleeve to end just above my elbow and the bell sleeve to end in the middle of my forearm, for 3/4 length sleeves. I am using the 1/2 length sleeve and ending it on the banded length. </span></div>

Place the plastic tape measure where your sleeve pattern ends. (Mine is just above the crook in my arm.) This is where your bell sleeve begins. Measure how long you want it to be. <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Because this was a muslin, I used an inexpensive rayon/spandex fabric. My bust measures at 32.5” which is just bigger than the size 0. I decided to cut out the size 0 anyway, because I was using such a thin fabric. I didn’t make any shoulder adjustments to this pattern and I didn’t need to! This has a lot to do with the armscye shape of the Marjorie. It doesn’t jut out at the top of the armscye, which is good for people like me with narrow shoulders. The fit is a little snug, but it's still very comfortable! When I make this again, I will probably size up...especially if I use a more structured fabric.</span></span><br />

</span></span> <span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Like I mentioned above, I shortened the dress into a top. I freehanded the cut edge of my shirt and I really like how it turned out! I slimmed the bodice 3/4" on the sides. I didn't hem my bodice because I just wasn't in the mood! ...And I like how it flows without a hem.</span><br />

I pattern tested the recently released <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/557707139/womens-allium-dolman-top-knit-top-knit?ref=shop_home_active_2">Allium Dolman</a> by Sew Like My Mom. This top and dress pattern is easy to sew and flatters a variety of shapes and sizes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nfshYULXgRw/WbqPDI4NW8I/AAAAAAAAOeU/Qfxw71Xb_74vhPgWeioREFqSDd_465m5wCLcBGAs/s1600/alliumdolmansewlikemymom.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img alt="dolman dress sewing pattern" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1143" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nfshYULXgRw/WbqPDI4NW8I/AAAAAAAAOeU/Qfxw71Xb_74vhPgWeioREFqSDd_465m5wCLcBGAs/s640/alliumdolmansewlikemymom.jpg" title="dolman dress sewing pattern" width="456" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It features a hemmed short or long sleeve dolman and scoop neck. The curved style line just above the bust is perfect for color blocking. The bodice is straight or gathered and has the option for pockets. The pattern ranges from ladies' sizes XXS to 3XL. </div>
</div>

</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Melissa drafts for 5'3" to 5'7" in height. The instructions tell you how to adjust your pattern for more or less length. The designer wants to make sure you busty gals don't end up in a size too big, so for this one you choose your size based on your high bust measurement. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This pattern is perfect for knits that have 30% stretch or more. I know I have a few knits with less than 50% stretch that sit in my stash for a loooong time. (I hate that! Gotta keep 'em movin!) Melissa recommends using a fabric that has more structure for the yoke, such as cotton/lycra. I used a heathered cotton/lycra from Purpleseamstress. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hfujixIH1kc/WbqPMipEKdI/AAAAAAAAOeo/W08ASbZrnAM3E5dAuUmjWgC2jUH4r-LawCEwYBhgL/s1600/alliumdolmansewlikemymom-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="dolman dress sewing pattern" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1036" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hfujixIH1kc/WbqPMipEKdI/AAAAAAAAOeo/W08ASbZrnAM3E5dAuUmjWgC2jUH4r-LawCEwYBhgL/s640/alliumdolmansewlikemymom-3.jpg" title="dolman dress sewing pattern" width="414" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That being said, you can use a knit for the bodice that has less than 30% or cut the bodice out in a woven fabric that has some drape, like a rayon challis. I purchased this pineapple fabric last year, not realizing it had barely any stretch. I didn't have anything to pair it with (I had purchased a yellow knit to go with it, but when it arrived it was not pineapple yellow, it was Batman yellow, grrr!) so I eventually went with the dark green as a contrast.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was worried about the green, but I'm actually really digging it! I think though, because of the pineapples and the length, that it's going to be a nightgown. What do you think? </div>
</div>
<div>

Made for Mermaids reached 35,000 Facebook followers this month and to celebrate they have released the <a href="https://www.madeformermaids.com/product/cora/">Cora Culottes</a> for girls, and the <a href="https://www.madeformermaids.com/product/mamacora/">Mama Cora Culottes</a> for ladies. The new patterns ($3 each) are a fundraiser for local Hurricane Harvey relief funds for the month of September. This pattern is drafted for moderate stretch knits with drape.</div>

My little lady and I tested this pattern and we love how comfy our culottes are! I'm not sure I've ever owned a pair...but wearing culottes is like wearing a swishy skirt with a bit of loose fabric between your legs. They are also super easy to sew! </div>

I made a straight size pink, 12" hem. This hem is supposed to hit just above the knee (I am short, so I removed 2.5 inches to get this length). <b>This is a thin, drapey rayon/spandex </b>from La Finch Fabrics. Not everyone person likes the way thin rayon/spandex hugs the skin, but I don't have a problem with it. In fact, I love how thin and airy this is!</div>

Today I'm going to show you a quick tutorial on how to move the waistline of a peplum top. I'll be using the <a href="http://www.peekaboopatternshop.com/rosemary-raglan/?aff=287">Rosemary Raglan</a>* from Peekaboo Pattern Shop. I love this pattern! It fits my daughter really well and is packed with options. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-itILpD0j7cY/Wa27ZnUfOQI/AAAAAAAAObY/-n9N-3x2RygGpyWh_6UaqA4EJS3wK9XDACLcBGAs/s1600/easypeplumhack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-itILpD0j7cY/Wa27ZnUfOQI/AAAAAAAAObY/-n9N-3x2RygGpyWh_6UaqA4EJS3wK9XDACLcBGAs/s640/easypeplumhack.jpg" title="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The peplum on this pattern is designed with a dropped waist, a waistline below the natural waist. For this project I moved the peplum up to the natural waist, and here is how you can do it, too:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Start with a multi-size pattern. If you're using a PDF pattern with layers, I recommend turning on layers with your size <u>and</u> a couple sizes bigger and smaller. (Out of respect to the designer, whole pattern pieces are not shown.)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "abel"; font-size: 16px;">{This post contains affiliate links, indicated by an asterisk*. Please refer to ‘About’ in the top menu for more info.}</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JCITYGiPijE/Wa28VVpnYhI/AAAAAAAAObg/b4D_LwjELYMyTZ2yc8Xv5sPuf4PNEkmGACLcBGAs/s1600/easypeplumhack0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1143" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JCITYGiPijE/Wa28VVpnYhI/AAAAAAAAObg/b4D_LwjELYMyTZ2yc8Xv5sPuf4PNEkmGACLcBGAs/s640/easypeplumhack0.jpg" title="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" width="456" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Take a look at your front bodice piece. This pattern tells me if I'm sewing the peplum option, I cut my bodice on the 'Peplum Tunic Cutting Line". Instead of doing that, I'm going to mark my daughter's natural waist on the pattern. You may want to hold the pattern piece up to your child (or your body if you are sewing for yourself) to check the position of the new waist. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-beYyfO6AC3E/Wa28qBowG1I/AAAAAAAAObk/xbGaLYQbgzcfgMdX1mLgatrIkwTjj8rPgCLcBGAs/s1600/easypeplumhack2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1143" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-beYyfO6AC3E/Wa28qBowG1I/AAAAAAAAObk/xbGaLYQbgzcfgMdX1mLgatrIkwTjj8rPgCLcBGAs/s640/easypeplumhack2.jpg" title="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" width="456" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The new waistline at the natural waist is shorter than the old waistline. Because the body is smaller at the waist than at the hips, this will affect which size peplum I cut out.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using a ruler, <span style="color: #674ea7;">draw a line</span> <b>parallel</b> to the center fold, starting from the side of your new waistline and extending down to your old waistline. <span style="color: #674ea7;">(Shown in PURPLE.)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OvnCXzLxeag/Wa29kISFgPI/AAAAAAAAObw/l2b-85qFmAwnfKYl_2PvDIh2WEP6Q8nHACLcBGAs/s1600/easypeplumhack4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" border="0" data-original-height="901" data-original-width="1600" height="360" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OvnCXzLxeag/Wa29kISFgPI/AAAAAAAAObw/l2b-85qFmAwnfKYl_2PvDIh2WEP6Q8nHACLcBGAs/s640/easypeplumhack4.jpg" title="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This line intersects with the 18 month size, so I know I will need to cut an 18 month size peplum. I want the width of the 18 month size, but my girl is a 2T so I'm going to add about 1" around the bottom edge of the peplum pattern piece, and then cut out my peplum.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d1kvL9L66BY/Wa2_RegtFCI/AAAAAAAAOcA/c3Dg4wNu4nMqFW_liAfaNSGvRwdZsAR2gCLcBGAs/s1600/easypeplumhack7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" border="0" data-original-height="1335" data-original-width="1600" height="532" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d1kvL9L66BY/Wa2_RegtFCI/AAAAAAAAOcA/c3Dg4wNu4nMqFW_liAfaNSGvRwdZsAR2gCLcBGAs/s640/easypeplumhack7.jpg" title="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Going back to the bodice piece...fold your pattern piece on the <span style="color: orange;">new waistline</span>. You can fold and tuck the lower part of the pattern out of the way. It's time to add your seam allowance. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ycKlm2m576Y/Wa2_fTR3oAI/AAAAAAAAOcE/HPT1P4_wRVUTwYg8EU7C3nrfUg5OkmfYwCLcBGAs/s1600/easyraglanhack6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ycKlm2m576Y/Wa2_fTR3oAI/AAAAAAAAOcE/HPT1P4_wRVUTwYg8EU7C3nrfUg5OkmfYwCLcBGAs/s640/easyraglanhack6.jpg" title="easy peplum hack how to modify a peplum" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cut your bodice pattern 1/2" lower than the edge of the new waistline to allow for your seam allowance.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Repeat with the BACK BODICE pattern piece, folding it at the waistline and adding your seam allowance before cutting out. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sew you peplum and bodice together according to the instructions.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

(This is the <a href="https://thepetitesewist.blogspot.com/2017/08/matilda-dress-by-violette-field-threads-pattern-review.html">Matilda Dress</a> from my last post and the lace in this video is some really cute pom-pom trim from <a href="http://rwrd.io/6sixtu3">Sew Vagabond</a>.) </div>

The <a href="https://violettefieldthreads.com/products/matilda-dress">Matilda Dress Pattern</a> by Violette Fields reminds me of a butterfly print peasant dress I made and wore when I was 15 years old. I loved using simple techniques to get a similar look for my daughter in a style that is easy to wear.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o43K3o9jLhQ/WaR0DbIDQSI/AAAAAAAAOZ4/1rgBlZdeyCUDyBGrbsr13JJzl8uQSBcOACLcBGAs/s1600/matilda-dress-violette-fields1%2Bcopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy toddler dress sewing pattern" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o43K3o9jLhQ/WaR0DbIDQSI/AAAAAAAAOZ4/1rgBlZdeyCUDyBGrbsr13JJzl8uQSBcOACLcBGAs/s640/matilda-dress-violette-fields1%2Bcopy.jpg" title="easy toddler dress sewing pattern" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The fabric is Cotton + Steel Basics XOXO in Pink Cheeks that I purchased at a local shop. I love the simplicity of this print! I made the dress with short cap sleeves. I used smaller elastic at the sleeve edge than it calls for. I think the wide elastic is a little overwhelming on a toddler.<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "abel"; font-size: 16px;">{This post contains affiliate links, indicated by an asterisk*. Please refer to ‘About’ in the top menu for more info.}</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made a 2T and cut it out 2" longer because my gal is tall compared to her bust measurement. It's pretty long...it kinda looks like a nightgown. She'll grow into it, right??</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YXOATRuzswc/WaR0DUuqDcI/AAAAAAAAOZ0/re2Ygb8F42gYcZLzWYw-JJeE2oCCO-wAwCLcBGAs/s1600/matilda-dress-violette-fields2%2Bcopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="easy toddler dress sewing pattern" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YXOATRuzswc/WaR0DUuqDcI/AAAAAAAAOZ0/re2Ygb8F42gYcZLzWYw-JJeE2oCCO-wAwCLcBGAs/s640/matilda-dress-violette-fields2%2Bcopy.jpg" title="easy toddler dress sewing pattern" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The white pom-pom trim is from <a href="http://rwrd.io/6sixtu3">Sew Vagabond</a>, she has the best trims!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The only problem I had with the pattern is that the elastic around the empire waist was way too short. The bodice was constantly riding up while my daughter was wore it and got worse after she hit a growth spurt. I took the casing apart and added about 1.5 inches to the elastic length and it fits perfectly!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fW1SUPIcHfY/WaR0DUaOm8I/AAAAAAAAOZ8/l4WkxlbT24gXjeFjhCOGQNNjD83aC5NTwCLcBGAs/s1600/matilda-dress-violete-fields3%2Bcopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="toddler peasant dress sewing pattern" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fW1SUPIcHfY/WaR0DUaOm8I/AAAAAAAAOZ8/l4WkxlbT24gXjeFjhCOGQNNjD83aC5NTwCLcBGAs/s640/matilda-dress-violete-fields3%2Bcopy.jpg" title="toddler peasant dress sewing pattern" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Have you tried any VFT patterns? What are some of your favorites? How did you like the fit?</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is my second <a href="http://thepetitesewist.blogspot.com/2016/02/jalie-3350-twist-front-swimsuit.html">Jalie 3350</a> swimsuit! This time, I made View A, which has the same neckline as View B, without the twist. Here's the patten envelope pictures so you can see the difference between the 2 views:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IfR0hsuQ4r4/U31Vm7-m4pI/AAAAAAAAHj4/b5lNHaDce20k1qxKycNC5NOIV64I-jgnwCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/IMG_6079.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="one piece swimsuit pattern review" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1253" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IfR0hsuQ4r4/U31Vm7-m4pI/AAAAAAAAHj4/b5lNHaDce20k1qxKycNC5NOIV64I-jgnwCPcBGAYYCw/s400/IMG_6079.jpg" title="Jalie 3350 Pattern Review" width="311" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was really excited to make this pattern in swim fabric from <a href="http://rwrd.io/6sixtu3">Sew Vagabond</a>. This fabric is absolutely gorgeous, a nice sturdy weight with good recovery. I found this pattern to be very true to size. I HIGHLY recommend Jalie swimwear patterns. The same pattern fits little girls all the way up to plus sizes! Score! <br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "abel"; font-size: 16px;">{This post contains affiliate links, indicated by an asterisk*. Please refer to ‘About’ in the top menu for more info.}</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The bust adjustment I did was rather severe - I took width out of the gathered area, and some length. I bought some cups from <a href="http://www.sewsassy.com/BraProducts/bra-and-swim-cups.html">Sew Sassy Fabrics</a> in a AA and they were super small and very thin. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z5qS_AQYrn4/WaRvtqo_VFI/AAAAAAAAOZc/gc-3TYvW1aMe7w-JFfxCsBTJEGltkgq8gCLcBGAs/s1600/swimsuit-cup-AA-sew-sassy1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="AA swim cups" border="0" data-original-height="1179" data-original-width="1600" height="293" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z5qS_AQYrn4/WaRvtqo_VFI/AAAAAAAAOZc/gc-3TYvW1aMe7w-JFfxCsBTJEGltkgq8gCLcBGAs/s400/swimsuit-cup-AA-sew-sassy1.jpg" title="Sew Sassy swim cups" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see, they are only 4" across. They are the smallest cups I've ever used. Since they fit, I can't complain too much, but next time I want something with more coverage!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x3ze0DWnKR0/WX_-OAp_ZVI/AAAAAAAANX8/mMC1Pq2afv0j2Yfpf5O2Xsa6XZFoxtE6ACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2144.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="swimsuit patterns for a small bust" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x3ze0DWnKR0/WX_-OAp_ZVI/AAAAAAAANX8/mMC1Pq2afv0j2Yfpf5O2Xsa6XZFoxtE6ACLcBGAs/s640/IMG_2144.jpg" title="one piece swimsuit sewing pattern" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The thing I don't love about this pattern is all of the bulk at the seam under the bust. There are 6 layers of fabric in this seam - SIX! I think if you're using bra cups, there is no reason to line the bodice twice, especially if your outer fabric is sturdy and doesn't show through. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ohnV6NkWiqc/WX_3mhWv4bI/AAAAAAAANXk/WBn7TXfsGKkhSh1wrqCbI_5PXmcEV-dagCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2147.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="swimsuit patterns for a small bust" border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ohnV6NkWiqc/WX_3mhWv4bI/AAAAAAAANXk/WBn7TXfsGKkhSh1wrqCbI_5PXmcEV-dagCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_2147.jpg" title="jalie swimsuit pattern" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I've only just noticed after viewing these pics that the right cup is being pulled down. It's no wonder I struggled a bit to sew the underbust seam with all those layers. I took a look inside and it appears that the gathered area slipped out a bit from the seam line while I was stitching it. The seam isn't laying flat, thus the pulling issue. This wouldn't have happened with fewer layers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PwjNcnnh4fA/WaRw0MRsQcI/AAAAAAAAOZo/7g2Xb2owTLgUGno4OKb1MU9dRdFAjiTlwCLcBGAs/s1600/jalie-swimsuit-review-gathers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1140" data-original-width="1600" height="456" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PwjNcnnh4fA/WaRw0MRsQcI/AAAAAAAAOZo/7g2Xb2owTLgUGno4OKb1MU9dRdFAjiTlwCLcBGAs/s640/jalie-swimsuit-review-gathers.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b>In my opinion, if you are planning to use swim cups, the bust area only needs one lining</b> (the thinner the better - mesh would be ok). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2M0lBmSlQ3M/WX_90XUfwNI/AAAAAAAANX4/AqtUGYunsRsuKk6Uz2HrEa4d-p3DoVszACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2155.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Jalie 3350 swimsuit sewing pattern" border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2M0lBmSlQ3M/WX_90XUfwNI/AAAAAAAANX4/AqtUGYunsRsuKk6Uz2HrEa4d-p3DoVszACLcBGAs/s640/IMG_2155.jpg" title="Jalie 3350 swimsuit sewing pattern" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Despite a couple of issues, I am really happy with it. This fits so much better than RTW ever would. <b>If you've never made swimwear before, I would strongly encourage you to give it a try!</b> <br />
<br />
I can hardly believe it's been 5 1/2 years since I made my very first swimsuit. I was TERRIFIED, but look how good <a href="http://thepetitesewist.blogspot.com/2012/02/swimsuit-sew-along-inserting-elastic.html">my first suit</a> turned out! (And I made the entire thing on my sewing machine, no serger required.)<br />
<br />
What swimwear patterns have you tried and loved? Which patterns are on your wish list?</div>

I was recently chosen as a <a href="https://www.sewingportfolios.com/">Sewing Portfolios</a> Ambassador which gave me the opportunity to sew up some <a href="https://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/">Michael Miller Fabrics</a> from the collection, "Catching Dreams". The collection will hit stores this October. This round of sewing ambassadors focused on projects using a 1/2 yard or less.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I decided to use 2 of the fabrics to make my 2 year old this super easy reversible elastic waist skirt. </div>

Adriana recently came out with these sweet yoga pants, called Mountain Pose Pants. In case you didn't know, this is a free pattern, provided you join her <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/heyjunehandmade/">Facebook group</a> and find the coupon code in the pinned post. I was really excited to try this pattern because Hey June Patterns are always well-drafted. They fit me well and they have great instructions. This is my first pair of yoga pants with a pieced, contoured waistband.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a7zCJbRcW8E/WX6BDU7EkEI/AAAAAAAANW4/3gBB3VCEZXAsFzipdzaUNRlv8l3ZO9PUACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2115.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="939" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a7zCJbRcW8E/WX6BDU7EkEI/AAAAAAAANW4/3gBB3VCEZXAsFzipdzaUNRlv8l3ZO9PUACLcBGAs/s640/IMG_2115.jpg" width="374" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For my size, I went by my hip measurements and cut out a straight XS for the legs, front and back. I cut out a L at the waist piece top and a M at the bottom edge of the waist piece. I wish I'd cut out a straight M waistband, the fit is quite big. If I'm unsure, I'd rather go with the bigger size at my waist because a snug waistband is just not comfortable. It really doesn't matter, though - because the waistband is pieced, it stays on my waist just fine!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I removed about 4" of length throughout the pattern. I removed another 2 3/4 inches when I hemmed the pant legs. They ended up being a tad too short but I don't even mind.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh, I totally forgot to mention, how cute is this sewing machine fabric! This custom sewing machine print from Love Adore, is double brushed polyester (DBP). The waistband is black athletic DBP from Zenith and Quasar and it has great stretch and recovery!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
If you haven't made these pants, they are super easy and fit great! Give them a try!</div>

I happened across the <a href="http://itch-to-stitch.com/product/kathryn-top-dress-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/?affiliates=86flowers">Kathryn Dress Pattern</a>* by Itch to Stitch while trying to find something for my very petite mother. At the beginning of the year, she sent me this picture of a RTW dress she liked:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FvGVKdd6vs4/WX5OGpFVNyI/AAAAAAAANWE/WWoO_Qr_vYItLQCQlOsDsORMotzb_6ypACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_00481.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1110" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FvGVKdd6vs4/WX5OGpFVNyI/AAAAAAAANWE/WWoO_Qr_vYItLQCQlOsDsORMotzb_6ypACLcBGAs/s640/IMG_00481.jpg" width="442" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My mom couldn't believe that this dress had an all over floral pattern which she loved! I think all the women in our family are a little floral obsessed, actually! She also liked how soft the fabric was, so I told her it was probably made of double brushed poly. The problem is, the smallest size was way too big and I doubted she would find anything similar that fit her and had the style she wanted.<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #666666; font-family: "abel"; font-size: 16px; font-stretch: inherit; font-style: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">{This post contains affiliate links, indicated by an asterisk*. Please refer to ‘About’ in the top menu for more info.}</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I told Mom I could make her one and we set out to find the perfect pattern! She wanted a dress that had some detail at the chest, and wasn't too form-fitting at the waist and hips. We eventually settled on the Kathryn and she chose this lovely floral DBP from <a href="http://rwrd.io/6sixtu3">Sew Vagabond</a>. My mom was in town, so I was able to fit her for an XS muslin. It ended up being a size too big. I probably should have known. My mom has the same body as me, only smaller and shorter. Kennis's patterns fit better on me sized down.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hGSI2JVkc0M/WX5OG2TZa2I/AAAAAAAANWI/qrwfVFCJF9YQ8GlClaNxyqTDdH1NdBmUQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2059.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="870" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hGSI2JVkc0M/WX5OG2TZa2I/AAAAAAAANWI/qrwfVFCJF9YQ8GlClaNxyqTDdH1NdBmUQCEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_2059.jpg" width="348" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The final dress is an XXS, graded out to to a XS at the waist (the dress has an empire waist). I did a SBA this way after getting a refresher from Melly Sews. This great <a href="http://mellysews.com/2015/09/how-to-do-a-bust-adjustment.html">tutorial</a> is for SBAs and FBAs, so check it out!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Also, I *<i>finally</i>* learned how to do a narrow shoulder adjustment on a dolman sleeve! Christine Haynes has this genius <a href="http://citystitching.com/blog/2016/6/17/lottie-sewalong-fba-sba-rotating-darts">blog post</a> on bust adjustments with a dolman sleeve. She demonstrates how to draw a <b><span style="color: #990000;">faux armscye</span></b>. I used her method of cutting off the 'sleeve' and then I did my narrow shoulder adjustment and SBA and then I pieced the 'sleeve' back on.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made adjustments for height because my mom is 4' 9" tall. I forgot to mention that by this point, my mom was home, 2000 miles away so I took lots of measurements. I knew that she wanted the dress to be 35" tall from the bottom of the neck. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Om56jRw2KeY/WX5OIioxEwI/AAAAAAAANWk/YDP9Ekd5vzs1FjBUXcSVKU4A1B3HUBkVwCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2139.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Om56jRw2KeY/WX5OIioxEwI/AAAAAAAANWk/YDP9Ekd5vzs1FjBUXcSVKU4A1B3HUBkVwCEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_2139.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The last adjustment I made was to bring the neckline in 1/2" all the way around.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nCKO-2GF-8o/WX5OG_JLk_I/AAAAAAAANWM/pJ8LsyA_YqIdLE6dv4Ruj9DEbH24mPeLQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2067.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1066" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nCKO-2GF-8o/WX5OG_JLk_I/AAAAAAAANWM/pJ8LsyA_YqIdLE6dv4Ruj9DEbH24mPeLQCEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_2067.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The finished dress is 1 size smaller than the original and 2 sizes smaller than the size I would have chosen based on my own measurements. After all that work, I had to try it on. And what do you know...it fits ME perfectly!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DLeJXmh9hzQ/WX5OHwGdc0I/AAAAAAAANWY/YCGH0GVeEjkyIThbcOAWGm-iqO41_jBWQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2092.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DLeJXmh9hzQ/WX5OHwGdc0I/AAAAAAAANWY/YCGH0GVeEjkyIThbcOAWGm-iqO41_jBWQCEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_2092.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The only problem I have is that the neckline gapes a little bit, how do I fix that? Just take out a little at center front? (The pic makes it looks worse than it is bc my shoulders are forward.) It looks like my center pleats are facing the wrong way but I don't even care.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Aqy2S9EVCNI/WX5OIc5SQSI/AAAAAAAANWg/v_-UI3Hr6ks1aguqE7SEoFXdJqRvIRT_ACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2136.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Aqy2S9EVCNI/WX5OIc5SQSI/AAAAAAAANWg/v_-UI3Hr6ks1aguqE7SEoFXdJqRvIRT_ACEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_2136.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is such a happy dress, I just love it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8UxAy5x7IKQ/WX5OHvU_tEI/AAAAAAAANWU/8QVfJGA_grwh8Psqj4K-5J0ben9KPTQ-ACEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2083.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="948" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8UxAy5x7IKQ/WX5OHvU_tEI/AAAAAAAANWU/8QVfJGA_grwh8Psqj4K-5J0ben9KPTQ-ACEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_2083.jpg" width="378" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I usually don't like to twin with my mom but she does have good taste in fabric. Maybe I'll have to make an exception...?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wPY_I3X3NgM/WX5OIMcR5nI/AAAAAAAANWc/hIkjOOvWNK0YjhKpq1-LSW7GJwQJYneoQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG_2095.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wPY_I3X3NgM/WX5OIMcR5nI/AAAAAAAANWc/hIkjOOvWNK0YjhKpq1-LSW7GJwQJYneoQCEwYBhgL/s640/IMG_2095.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyway, I hope it fits her because she's waited for it to be done for way to long!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
UPDATE: The dress (no surprise) was too big for my mom so I am keeping it. I plan to grade down the XXS one size and make the dress again. </div>

I bought this <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/0364105/kaufman-chambray-union-dots-indigo">Robert Kaufmann chambray</a> a couple years ago planning to make a shirtdress. Well, I totally botched the top - this is back when I was doing every narrow shoulder adjustment wrong - and it didn't fit at all. It got stashed in my UFO pile and I was filled with regret every time I saw it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I saw the testing call for these pants I decided this would be the perfect way to get this chambray out of my UFO pile. The <a href="http://www.patternsforpirates.com/product/linen-loungers/?affiliates=339">Linen Loungers</a>* by Patterns for Pirates are great in lightweight fabrics with drape. The designer recommends linen, linen blends, rayon, chambray and crepe.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FZVlXNvZbbY/WXH6TtAbiaI/AAAAAAAANTY/YMARPeS7OIoj4O4g0_-aIuQxdPrQ0U6XACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1465.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FZVlXNvZbbY/WXH6TtAbiaI/AAAAAAAANTY/YMARPeS7OIoj4O4g0_-aIuQxdPrQ0U6XACLcBGAs/s640/IMG_1465.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made the bermuda length shorts with front slat pockets and I added some vintage lace trim.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f6eIXRyK0GQ/WXH6TWuC4UI/AAAAAAAANTc/F0i58cLm_2QcClSAvpLABD8vWRYRcel4gCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1459.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-f6eIXRyK0GQ/WXH6TWuC4UI/AAAAAAAANTc/F0i58cLm_2QcClSAvpLABD8vWRYRcel4gCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_1459.jpg" width="426" /></a><br />
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I normally make an XS, graded out to a M. I didn't know until I'd already made them, that <b>there is no need to grade to a bigger size at the waist</b>. This design is already roomy in the hips and waist (it has to be so that you can get the fabric over your booty). Go by your hip size and simply cut your elastic for your waist size.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
These shorts are super comfy! I've been wearing them around the house and to bed. Maybe I will plan some more projects with lightweight wovens. They are so nice to wear in the heat!</div>

I tested these adorable tulip shorts by Bella Sunshine Designs this week.</div>

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gwpXM1_x7jE/WWxENQsqzaI/AAAAAAAANSo/St--Wp6YcOMZQEt07NTnHzx-1lidi0QzgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1784.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gwpXM1_x7jE/WWxENQsqzaI/AAAAAAAANSo/St--Wp6YcOMZQEt07NTnHzx-1lidi0QzgCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_1784.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I just love sewing kids' clothing because it gives me almost instant gratification. Also, toddlers are not aware if there are fit issues and they don't have areas of their body they are trying to disguise. Because I do, and sometimes it's exhausting!! And toddlers are exhausting, so at least my daughter isn't complicated when it comes to clothing - YET.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But I digress...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The <a href="https://bellasunshinedesigns.com/product/tess-tulip-shorts-girls/?affiliates=86flowers%40gmail.com">Tess Tulip Shorts</a>* have a short option (think booty shorts) and an equally adorable longer version. There is an option for pockets, if your little Peggy Sue is into that. But the thing I love most about this pattern is how fun it looks with trim!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
The shorts are nice and flat in the front and the waistband has encased elastic in the back. You can't tell, but I used some elastic from an old pair of undies in those shorts. Ummm...Goodwill or scrap pile? Scrap pile it is. Can't give away perfectly good notions!</div>

I am one of the lucky folks that test drove the <a href="https://itch-to-stitch.com/product/oceanside-dress-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/?affiliates=86flowers">Oceanside Dress</a>* by Itch to Stitch. I absolutely love this dress! It is so comfortable and easy to wear. It looks good on all body types. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l4FJISdDmTI/WVHM9tuOFMI/AAAAAAAANQY/Y9BXa9HU_QgHa0C2XWQLpuOgad7V1Mc-wCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1344.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l4FJISdDmTI/WVHM9tuOFMI/AAAAAAAANQY/Y9BXa9HU_QgHa0C2XWQLpuOgad7V1Mc-wCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_1344.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can wear it to the beach or on your way to work out (as one of the testers planned to do) or for date night. There are a lot of different options for color-blocking this dress, and you can make it with or without 'V' inset. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My dress is a size 0 graded out to a 4 in the waist. I used a grey bamboo/lycra jersey and an Art Gallery cotton/lycra for the contrast. I opted to do a solid 'V' and topstitch it. The topstitching is kind of 'meh' so there is no close up photo.<br />

I made a second Oceanside during the test. This was a 2 graded out to a 6 at the waist with no inset. It was too big, so I took it in some. I should have taken it in more at the waist, lesson learned, lol! That waistband needs to hug your body so that it gives you a nice waist and doesn't get stretched out of place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jlf1BDhw7u8/WVJRUachEPI/AAAAAAAANQ4/KFhAXA3DQys6MiYpBdt4Xw6vT5Bxp1VFQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1434.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1008" data-original-width="692" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jlf1BDhw7u8/WVJRUachEPI/AAAAAAAANQ4/KFhAXA3DQys6MiYpBdt4Xw6vT5Bxp1VFQCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_1434.jpg" width="438" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The dress instructions tell you how to lengthen or shorten the skirt. My peplum pattern piece is about 9" long. The peplum arrived on the scene 5 years ago and this is the first garment I've made (or worn) with one! I used to think the peplum was only for people with an ample bust. I love this pattern because it brings attention to my upper body so that I don't feel lopsided, if you know what I mean. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>A few tips for this you:</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
- Clear elastic at the waist is a MUST! It seriously pulls the waistband in and makes the garment look super polished! I buy only 1/4" thin clear elastic. You can get it from Sew Sassy Fabrics and So Sew English Fabrics. I love being able to feed my clear elastic through my serger as I sew the seam. But if you don't have a serger (or if that intimidates you) you can sew the seam on the sewing machine and attach the clear elastic next. (This is the method used in the instructions.)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LDFXFscNNpo/WVHM-A74FwI/AAAAAAAANQg/zUMQh-hig1Ac3BjE8YOsDK-p9sgIydv5wCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1426.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="921" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LDFXFscNNpo/WVHM-A74FwI/AAAAAAAANQg/zUMQh-hig1Ac3BjE8YOsDK-p9sgIydv5wCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_1426.jpg" width="368" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
- Try on the waistband prior to attaching it to the bodice or skirt. Make sure it hugs your waist BEFORE you attach it to the bodice or skirt. A form-fitting waistband is crucial to giving you a nice silhouette. It means that the waistband will lie flat even if gathers are sewn to it. If your waistband doesn't hug your waist, you may want to take it in before you get any farther. You will avoid A LOT of unpicking. *AHEM!* </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SiyOAadWt4E/WVJRaoDYxeI/AAAAAAAANQ8/W4pz-V1VqskVYAmD98tMsDTQkKpy_e3cgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1447.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="977" data-original-width="1123" height="556" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SiyOAadWt4E/WVJRaoDYxeI/AAAAAAAANQ8/W4pz-V1VqskVYAmD98tMsDTQkKpy_e3cgCLcBGAs/s640/IMG_1447.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
- Consider how your fabric choice will affect the look and feel of the garment. My dress has a drapey bamboo/lycra bodice and skirt. The main part of my top is cotton/lycra. It has less drape and more body so it comes away from the body more. Neither is right or wrong, it just depends on the look you're going for.<br />

<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4pmOcsgb-Ag/WTHo-gwgMqI/AAAAAAAAMyA/GA68Y85Ai9gE3cMQ2MEjJ8QJs8gH5duSwCLcB/s1600/PicMonkey%2BCollageTEXT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="975" data-original-width="1600" height="388" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4pmOcsgb-Ag/WTHo-gwgMqI/AAAAAAAAMyA/GA68Y85Ai9gE3cMQ2MEjJ8QJs8gH5duSwCLcB/s640/PicMonkey%2BCollageTEXT.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I had been searching for a new short sleeved t-shirt pattern after realizing that my old ones are just not working for me anymore. I wanted a top with a relaxed fit, sort of like those Boyfriend Tees I see at Target. It needed to work for moderate stretch knits, particularly knits with a little less stretch lengthwise. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then I realized...I already had a pattern that fit my requirements: The <a href="http://itch-to-stitch.com/product/arenal-top-digital-sewing-pattern-pdf/?affiliates=86flowers">Arenal Top</a>* by Itch to Stitch Patterns (aff link). This pattern, which I tested for last fall, calls for knit fabric with 100% stretch widthwise and 30% lengthwise. Kennis states that drapey knits work best for this top. If you use something with more or less drape you may need to size up or down. I chose the fitted top option. <br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "abel"; font-size: 16px;">{This post contains affiliate links, indicated by an asterisk*. Please refer to ‘About’ in the top menu for more info.}</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u><br /></u></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u>Fit Adjustments:</u></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My bust measurement puts me at a size 6. However, when I was testing, I found the shirt to be a bit baggy on me, so I sized down to a 4. I did a narrow shoulder adjustment. Sometimes it can be difficult for me to gauge how much of a shoulder adjustment I need. I find that comparing the pattern with another top in my closet made out of similar fabric helps me get it right. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><i>Pattern Modifications:</i></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made a couple of modifications to make the Arenal Top the perfect summer tee. The pattern does not come with a short sleeve option, but that is easy to fix. I decided where I wanted the sleeve edge to hit my arm, added some length for my seam allowance, and cut off the bottom part of the sleeve.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I chose not to color block the bodice fronts. The pattern piece is easy to alter. All you have to do is draw where the seam line would be on the bottom of the yoke and on the top of the bodice front. Then, you place the two pattern pieces together, lining them up at the seam line. Tape them together, and you've made the yoke and the bodice front essentially one pattern piece!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u><b>3 Summer Tops</b></u></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>I made the Arenal Top in three fabrics to compare the staple fabrics of my knit summer wardrobe: <span style="color: #274e13;">bamboo</span>, <span style="color: #660000;">modal</span> and <span style="color: #073763;">cotton</span>. These breathable fabrics are perfect for braving a hot, humid summer. I live in the Southern USA, so I don't take my fabric choices lightly!</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><i><span style="color: #660000;">Modal Jersey Top</span></i></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><i><span style="color: #660000;"><br /></span></i></u></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><i><span style="color: #660000;"><br /></span></i></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love this <a href="http://sosewenglishfabrics.com/solid-modal-modal-spandex-knit-similar-to-rayon-spandex-by-the-yard/">modal fabric</a> from So Sew English. This fabric has 50% stretch widthwise and 40% stretch lengthwise. In a nutshell, <a href="http://www.yesitsorganic.com/rayon-modal-tencel-environmental-friends-or-foes.html#axzz4iiCtn1lJ">modal</a> is a second-generation rayon fabric that has more wet strength than rayon, is softer, and holds more water than cotton. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uxb5aOuY1PE/WTIE_D7SGYI/AAAAAAAAMyc/-C_0km_n_NEOPKjEiIBsh_1mrJ_uqKAbACLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_1356.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1152" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uxb5aOuY1PE/WTIE_D7SGYI/AAAAAAAAMyc/-C_0km_n_NEOPKjEiIBsh_1mrJ_uqKAbACLcB/s640/fullsizeoutput_1356.jpeg" width="460" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can see, the top is very drapey in modal. I cut the hemline to be curved. (This was also an easy pattern mod.) I love the way the hem turned out, and I'm so pleased with the fit!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This fabric is absolutely perfect for this top. I need more of these modal solids, STAT!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u><span style="color: #274e13;"><br /></span></u></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This <a href="https://www.allielaneinabbyville.com/product/bamboo-kelly/">Kelly Bamboo Jersey</a> from Allielane in Abbyville has 100% stretch widthwise and 30% stretch lengthwise. It has a wonderful, soft hand and has a beautiful, soft sheen. It is the most luxurious-feeling and the most expensive fabric I used. In previous years, I've only been able to find bamboo in the $16-20 price point. I was really happy to find this bamboo for just a bit more than my CLUB jersey prints. The widthwise stretch of the fabric affected the fit of the sleeves. The top of the armscye sits a bit farther off the shoulder.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7XGa03kzh3c/WTIEv7IpVYI/AAAAAAAAMyY/MAg9KNlSrik9Pb8BUqYOyB0khKvwmkIQwCLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_135c.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1102" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7XGa03kzh3c/WTIEv7IpVYI/AAAAAAAAMyY/MAg9KNlSrik9Pb8BUqYOyB0khKvwmkIQwCLcB/s640/fullsizeoutput_135c.jpeg" width="440" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'll admit, this fabric was a bit frustrating to sew with. It slipped under my presser foot A LOT, despite me using a walking foot. But, the finished product looks just as good as the modal tee, so I won't be giving up sewing with bamboo any time soon. If you're a newer sewist, you might want to choose a more stable fabric to learn on.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u><span style="color: #073763;">Cotton Jersey Top</span></u></i> </div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><u><span style="color: #073763;"><br /></span></u></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My third top is in cotton/lycra made from some fun <a href="https://www.etsy.com/transaction/1266487853">CLUB mint stripes</a> from Raspberry Creek Fabrics paired with Icy Mint Knit from Art Gallery. Both fabrics have 50% stretch widthwise and lengthwise. Cotton has more body than rayon, bamboo and modal. It doesn't drape well, but it works just fine for this view of the top. I love tops made out of cotton jersey because they breathe well and they don't tend to snag. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was concerned that the increased thickness of the fabric would affect the fit around the arm, making it tight and uncomfortable. I didn't want to size up, so I chose to use a 1/4" seam allowance at the armscye and side seams. It feels a bit roomy and is so comfortable! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><br /></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u>Final Thoughts</u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can see, the fabric you use can change the entire look of your garment. The bamboo and modal tops are very drapey. I think they are dressier and give the wearer a more feminine silhouette. I love how thin these are, without being see through. They are the most comfortable tops I own! The big differences I noticed between these two types of fabrics is that the bamboo is softer and has more of a sheen to it, and the modal is slightly more stable and was easier to sew with.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The cotton jersey top has a more structured look. This fabric is the most stable of the knits I sewed with. The CLUB fabric, especially, is almost spongy and is a great fabric for a beginner.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope you've enjoyed this comparison post! If you've made your own version of the Arenal Top for summer, post your blog link below. I'd love to see them!</div>

When I took pictures of the <a href="https://5outof4.com/product/camilla-cowl-neck-top-dress/?affiliates=131">Camilla Top</a>* I was also wearing my new <a href="http://www.patternsforpirates.com/product/pirate-pencil-skirt//?affiliates=339">Pirate Pencil Skirt</a>* by Patterns for Pirates. I've had this on my to do list since last fall. I have a few tops/blouses with navy colors so I really needed a plain navy skirt to wear with them. This is a really easy sew, and great for a first knit project. It's even easier than making <a href="http://www.patternsforpirates.com/product/peg-legs/?affiliates=339">Peg Legs</a>*!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used a <a href="https://www.fabric.com/find?SearchText=telio+ponte+leggero+knit">Telio Ponte Leggero Knit</a> from Fabric.com in <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/0319026/telio-ponte-leggero-knit-navy">Navy</a>...and let me tell you, this stuff is like BUTTAH! It's really lightweight and would work well for a top or even a dress. It has 40% stretch widthwise and 25% vertical stretch. This fabric is so lightweight it will be an all-season neutral skirt.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used an XS, mid rise option. The pencil skirt pattern is for a skirt that is quite form-fitting in the legs. I graded out the pattern past the hips so that it is pretty straight up and down to give me more room to move.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The pattern doesn't call for an elastic waistband, but it's something I wanted, so I chose to turn the waistband into a casing for my elastic. Since I only had 1 1/4" elastic I made my waistband 1" shorter (4" tall, folded in half) than the pattern called for. I finished off my project by coverstitching the skirt hem.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I can't stress how wonderful it is to be able to hem a skirt just where you want it!</div>

Stephaniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18398093884212247307noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6916624238912645801.post-1037063967592188702017-03-30T09:16:00.000-04:002017-08-31T09:41:13.539-04:005 out of 4 Patterns Camilla Top <div style="text-align: center;">
Today I'm reviewing the <a href="https://5outof4.com/product/camilla-cowl-neck-top-dress/?affiliates=131">Camilla Cowl Neck Top and Dress</a>* by 5 out of 4 Patterns, which I pattern tested last week. The Camilla Top has a draped cowl neckline, which is super flattering! I am small busted and have narrow shoulders, so I'm always looking for details at the bust area to bring the attention near my face. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m4DP5C9Q6mk/WN0EIhC9cfI/AAAAAAAALn0/_H305iTTekgi4ySow9hX4yAFnxvgt6yYACLcB/s1600/5oo4_WomensCamilla_XXS_shirt11.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m4DP5C9Q6mk/WN0EIhC9cfI/AAAAAAAALn0/_H305iTTekgi4ySow9hX4yAFnxvgt6yYACLcB/s640/5oo4_WomensCamilla_XXS_shirt11.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This pattern works great as a nursing shirt - no mods needed. Don't let the fancy neckline deceive you - this is a really easy pattern to whip up! The way the tutorial has you finish off the neck and shoulders means that the front neck will not flip up - it's going to stay right in place.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vTk7Fan34og/WN0D6lMhAMI/AAAAAAAALns/woSGXRmHKxQu7RhO9vHrv7mR-PEqv16hQCLcB/s1600/5oo4_WomensCamilla_XXS_shirt2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-vTk7Fan34og/WN0D6lMhAMI/AAAAAAAALns/woSGXRmHKxQu7RhO9vHrv7mR-PEqv16hQCLcB/s640/5oo4_WomensCamilla_XXS_shirt2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm really happy to have an easy pattern for flowy, drapey fabrics. Some of the fabric I used for this test had been in my fabric stash for 4 years!<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "abel"; font-size: 16px;">{This post contains affiliate links, indicated by an asterisk*. Please refer to ‘About’ in the top menu for more info.}</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My measurements put me in an XS for the bust, but the XXS ended up fitting me better. This may have to do with my petite figure and small bust. I took 1/2" out of center front and 2" for length at the waist. (This is an adjustment I have to make to all of my patterns.) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This shirt length tee is made from <a href="https://www.fabric.com/buy/up-280/telio-stretch-bamboo-rayon-jersey-knit-plum">Telio bamboo jersey</a> from Fabric.com. I've really been enjoying ordering from smaller shops, but they don't always have what I want. I was very pleased with the quality of this bamboo jersey and it was only $11/yd! Bamboo jersey, like rayon jersey, drapes well but is more comfortable in hot weather, so it's a must for hot summers. This jersey doesn't have as much stretch as the pattern calls for, however, so be aware of that. The shoulders were a tad bit snug so I'll need to bring the armscye out next time I make this top.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My husband loves the way this color brings out her eyes!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For my first version, I used a lightweight cotton/spandex (and maybe rayon?) polka dot knit from Purpleseamstress and AG knit for the bands.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I had a little puckering at the neckline but that was most likely due to the different fabrics I chose. About half of the testers, though, were having neck issues during testing. This was a little frustrating and took some time to solve, but Melissa persevered and came up with a great solution! The result is a great pattern!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My second make was a med-weight cotton/lycra with the same fabric for the bands. Such an easy top! I've been making a lot of clothing for Cici this month (because I have sooo many scraps). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The shorts are Bonny Leggings by M4M. The fabric is from my first attempt at leggings about 5 years ago that was an utter fail. So glad I could put the fabric to good use! I changed the pattern so it has an elastic waist.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Last week I got to pattern test for Patterns for Pirates' cute new pattern, the <a href="http://www.patternsforpirates.com/product/heart-breaker-cami/?affiliates=339">Heart Breaker Cami</a>*. Sizing ranges from 3 months to girls' 14. It has optional front ruffle, flutters on the straps, plain or with a 'X' in the back.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m6GEdHclMxU/WMnpV6fHWfI/AAAAAAAALUU/kSl9CuIc-Lw3wsHxdspopTgtY41zLYJDgCLcB/s1600/IMG_1258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-m6GEdHclMxU/WMnpV6fHWfI/AAAAAAAALUU/kSl9CuIc-Lw3wsHxdspopTgtY41zLYJDgCLcB/s640/IMG_1258.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was really excited to test this cami because Serenity needed a new swimsuit for spring. (Yes, we go to the beach in spring around here!) <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This cami is a straight 12 month size with the flutters in a blue nylon/lycra milliskin matte from I don't remember...Spandex House? Spandex World?... one of those and a print I probably got at old Denver Fabrics before I moved from Denver. I decided I wasn't in love with the print so this is the second suit I've cut it into swimwear for my daughter.<br />
<br />
<b><u>Sizing:</u></b> The other testers and I found this pattern to be sized well. Choose one of the recommended fabrics and use the size chart!<br />
<br />
<b><u>Friendly flutter tip:</u></b> The construction on this part may seem totally counterintuitive. Take deep breaths! Read the instructions. Read them again! Then proceed step by step *carefully* and check the tutorial photos as you go. I kept thinking 'my flutters are on backwards!' but they were not. The tutorial really will guide you through it!<br />
<br />
<b><u>Topstitching:</u></b> I did this on my coverstitch and Judy recommends the WIDE coverstitch because it secures each side of the strap evenly. You totally don't need a coverstitch, though, a simple zig zag on your sewing machine will do just fine.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used the Maillot Skirt swim pattern from Call Ajaire Patterns for my daughter's bottoms. I obviously omitted the skirt part and just made the briefs. They were suuuper easy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

We had a blast at the beach last Friday! It was 80 degrees and mostly sunny. It was the FIRST time in over a year that we, as parents, got to lay in the sand while our child happily played in ONE spot and didn't try to kill herself by running head first into the waves. Seriously, that child wants to swim to China!</div>

I love this peachy Art Gallery cotton/lycra solid. It's been sitting in my stash for about a year so I was glad to finally cut this t-shirt out. I cut out a straight size small with a little length added to the bottom hem and some length taken off the sleeves.</span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ihrWBCu5BvI/WLYAn9ZM60I/AAAAAAAAK6U/TmmAnbo0ORsQtLPtKu3vWRxW0UOytzPuwCLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_10fa.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ihrWBCu5BvI/WLYAn9ZM60I/AAAAAAAAK6U/TmmAnbo0ORsQtLPtKu3vWRxW0UOytzPuwCLcB/s640/fullsizeoutput_10fa.jpeg" width="456" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: center;">I wanted to make a faux button placket by the shoulder. I'm not sure that's even what you call it...but this was my inspiration photo:</span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EGNLQlgm4N0/WLX_pCev_II/AAAAAAAAK6I/jaAdxuEKwkUWUKt84zGoTF8mh_rQW2zAACK4B/s1600/imageService.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EGNLQlgm4N0/WLX_pCev_II/AAAAAAAAK6I/jaAdxuEKwkUWUKt84zGoTF8mh_rQW2zAACK4B/s640/imageService.jpg" width="556" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">from loft.com</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It took some math and some drafting (I took a look at my drafting book) but eventually I got it to look like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2BjqwiK9JQ0/WLYAHJ95DOI/AAAAAAAAK6M/IA3-rwM-UTsPI1MDb-9AS3hI5nw7sPmTACLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_10fc.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2BjqwiK9JQ0/WLYAHJ95DOI/AAAAAAAAK6M/IA3-rwM-UTsPI1MDb-9AS3hI5nw7sPmTACLcB/s640/fullsizeoutput_10fc.jpeg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The placket replaces the shoulder seam, just for the left side of the shirt. I used some buttons from Hobby Lobby and I decided to topstitch with white thread instead of trying to match this specific color of peach. I added a larger seam allowance to the neckline so I could fold it over and stitch it. I used some fusible tape to keep it in place while I coverstitched it. Hopefully the neckline washes up nicely!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zGWAr-sWNME/WLYAvCS9NmI/AAAAAAAAK6Y/tuEorRDvNzMKMD9TlFlH7YNClssHA8ZDQCLcB/s1600/fullsizeoutput_10f8.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zGWAr-sWNME/WLYAvCS9NmI/AAAAAAAAK6Y/tuEorRDvNzMKMD9TlFlH7YNClssHA8ZDQCLcB/s640/fullsizeoutput_10f8.jpeg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My only complaint with the fit is that the armscye is to high and is cutting me under the arm. And now that I can see it in the photos, it's really bugging me! I did not have this problem when I made my first Tonic Tee. Maybe I did a slightly smaller seam allowance? I can't remember...or maybe the DBP just behaved a lot differently than this cotton/lycra.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Can anyone tell me how to fix it? I'm wondering if I just need to size up in the sleeves. This would make the armscye lower so it would not be digging under my arms.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Kind of a shame this happened with such a nice top! Do you think I could cut out bigger sleeves, lower the armscye and salvage this one?</div>

Today I want to show you the peplum cardigan I tested for <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/sewlikemymom?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Sew Like My Mom</a>, the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/499907638/ficus-cardigan-pdf-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_1">Ficus Cardigan</a>. This is the womens' version of the Fern Cardigan that I tested a few weeks ago. This pattern has a wide range of sizes, from XXS to 3XL. You can purchase the Fern and the Ficus bundle <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/513393275/fern-ficus-cardigan-pdf-pattern-bundle?ref=shop_home_active_3">here</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-POYHYtpBOdM/WKju_6_4rqI/AAAAAAAAKxc/Vb4ilqisyoMyR9x5XLUjbnV2Zx5S7z32gCLcB/s1600/IMG_0641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-POYHYtpBOdM/WKju_6_4rqI/AAAAAAAAKxc/Vb4ilqisyoMyR9x5XLUjbnV2Zx5S7z32gCLcB/s640/IMG_0641.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used a poly/rayon/lycra (mostly polyester) french terry from LA Finch Fabrics. This was my first time purchasing from Josephine. She had fast, friendly shipping! She even rushed to get my order done because she knew I needed it to test this cardigan! Thank you!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uvD_RIDe9xk/WKjvC_blrCI/AAAAAAAAKxk/IPcwNWqWTpEDUkNJkCtuYkmllV0un1ziACLcB/s1600/IMG_0598.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uvD_RIDe9xk/WKjvC_blrCI/AAAAAAAAKxk/IPcwNWqWTpEDUkNJkCtuYkmllV0un1ziACLcB/s640/IMG_0598.jpg" width="442" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This fabric has 40% stretch widthwise, and 10% stretch lengthwise. It is very soft and is nice and thin. That's important to me in Charleston, where winter lasts like 8 seconds. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I first made a muslin and tested for the small size (according to my bust), but I didn't like how baggy it was, so Melissa let me size down. This final black cardi is an XS with adjustments made for my narrow shoulders and my short height. I think if I were to make this cardigan again, I would size the waist down to an XXS. I just prefer my garments to be form fitting and to give me a waist! (Of course, if I used the tie that comes with the pattern, that would give me a waist, too.)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

I found this to be an easy sew, especially because I had just made one in Serenity's size. I made this completely on my serger/coverstitch machine because my sewing machine was in the shop.</div>

I finally made my very own <a href="https://www.sbccpatterns.com/products/tonic-tee">Tonic Tee</a> by SBCC Patterns! I got my hands on one of Betsy's patterns nearly 4 years ago, the <a href="http://thepetitesewist.blogspot.com/2013/06/sb-302-maxi-skirt.html">Cosmo Maxi Skirt</a>. I love that Betsy designs specifically for petites. (She explains how to lengthen her patterns if you are of average or above average height.) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qCY3CnV4T5k/WKErbQADzqI/AAAAAAAAKt0/tVRQxIVFBH8055XOlAT20ULMvaGSue50wCLcB/s1600/IMG_0541.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qCY3CnV4T5k/WKErbQADzqI/AAAAAAAAKt0/tVRQxIVFBH8055XOlAT20ULMvaGSue50wCLcB/s640/IMG_0541.jpg" width="374" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I decided to use this pattern because I decided my TNT t-shirt pattern wasn't really working for me and I was ready to try something new, and hopefully get a better fit.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3aIP1jqNUvg/WKErbVmNGOI/AAAAAAAAKt4/crFFEiiaxOc_5hsnI7KZLVm2WX3kyxb8QCLcB/s1600/IMG_0552.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3aIP1jqNUvg/WKErbVmNGOI/AAAAAAAAKt4/crFFEiiaxOc_5hsnI7KZLVm2WX3kyxb8QCLcB/s640/IMG_0552.jpg" width="364" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Tonic Tee is a free PDF pattern available on the SBCC website. The only change I made to the pattern was to bring the neckline up slightly in the front. I used a double brushed poly knit from Allielane in Abbyville. (I recently made my mom a blouse with the same fabric...but I have even more red roses in my stash!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nFTeA9Es8C4/WKErbZfsq1I/AAAAAAAAKtw/I_kvhqpJwQAgsJAz_ChDfcEcD1ee79RpwCLcB/s1600/IMG_0565.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nFTeA9Es8C4/WKErbZfsq1I/AAAAAAAAKtw/I_kvhqpJwQAgsJAz_ChDfcEcD1ee79RpwCLcB/s640/IMG_0565.jpg" width="512" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I rarely find a pattern I don't have to alter extensively. I am really happy with the fit of this garment. Other than the bottom hem being slightly too short (like only 1/2") for my liking, this top fits wonderfully! I did cut the neckband too long so it gapes a bit. However, I'm the only one who will notice this, so I probably won't change it.</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

This is Dede the bulldog, my gordita! We've had her for 2 years and she is my buddy!</div>

This <a href="http://www.heyjunehandmade.com/product/lane-raglan/?affiliates=52">Lane Raglan</a>* is not for me, it's for my mom. I had to put it on before I shipped it off to her this week. I absolutely love this print! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's a double brushed poly that I have seen from a number of shops this winter, but I purchased it from Allielane in Abbyville. I think DBP is popular with sewists because of its low price and it's also super soft and warm for the winter. I don't wear it as a rule because South Carolina is a sweaty swamp, but I make an exception for winter. And winter here lasts like 2 months, tops. My coworker found pollen on her car this morning, so I know spring is coming STAT!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I made this cowl I had no idea what I was doing. I made the collar out of two trapezoids, the angled sides sewn together into a tube and the shorter sizes attached to the collar. I found out afterwards that I could have just sewn a rectangle into a tube the width of the neckband. Oh well, maybe my mom will never notice the extra seam. It turned out really cute, anyhow. I made it 12" tall (folded). I think a cowl any taller would overwhelm her petite figure. She is, after all, 4" shorter than me!<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also love how the cowl looks with my red bomber jacket. Isn't that slick? The lighting's kind of sucky in the last photo. What idiot decided to cut back my neighbor's pine tree branches?! Don't they know I need those there to soften the late afternoon light? Like, that's way more important than keeping them out of power lines.</div>

Have I mentioned how versatile the <a href="https://www.heyjunehandmade.com/?affiliates=52">Lane Raglan pattern</a> is? Like, you seriously need this in your life. And I'm probably going to keep posting about them and you are going to keep being sad that you don't have it, so you should just order it now, lol!</div>

This past week I pattern tested for this adorable sweater, the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/509775375/fern-cardigan-12m-16-pdf-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_2">Fern Cardigan</a>, by Sew Like My Mom. Melissa's pattern ranges from 12 months to girls' size 16. She also sells the pattern for a lower price for a fewer range of sizes. This pattern has different sleeve options and can be worn with or without the tie.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1Y1szaNxsbQ/WJYcR21Ap-I/AAAAAAAAKjQ/UtSeTvxTunYeUwTk8uo-RmAU3owk_yhmACLcB/s1600/IMG_0322.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1Y1szaNxsbQ/WJYcR21Ap-I/AAAAAAAAKjQ/UtSeTvxTunYeUwTk8uo-RmAU3owk_yhmACLcB/s640/IMG_0322.jpg" width="454" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This pattern is seriously a breeze to whip up! I just got my coverstitch/serger back from the shop and had to take my sewing machine in. Waaaaa!!! Such torture...I want them back together again! So I constructed this entirely on my coverstitch/serger machine. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aViZ4JNDdjI/WJYdt1O5TsI/AAAAAAAAKjc/yJOWvBM8iRA-0r5LHzj4J0boKliEshx-QCLcB/s1600/IMG_0320.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aViZ4JNDdjI/WJYdt1O5TsI/AAAAAAAAKjc/yJOWvBM8iRA-0r5LHzj4J0boKliEshx-QCLcB/s640/IMG_0320.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The pattern calls for any knit with 30% stretch. A ponte or double knit would work well with this pattern, but jerseys with more stretch work great, too! I used a cotton/lycra from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/RaspberryCreekFabric?ref=l2-shopheader-name">Raspberry Creek Fabrics</a> with about 50% stretch. (The fabric is no longer available - RCF is actually changing their CLUB fabrics from screen printed to being digitally printed in house. I'm excited to see their first round of new fabrics!) I'm really glad I chose a stretchier fabric because Serenity is at the top of the chest measurement for the 18 month size. She will have a few months, at least, of wear in this cardigan before it is too small.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can see in the photos, we found out in testing that the sleeves were a little too tapered from the elbow to the wrist. That has been fixed for the final pattern. I made my ties 2" longer than the pattern called for, just personal preference. The length was perfect on her.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I previously made a dress for Serenity out of this fabric, but it remains un-blogged because the designer I was testing for never released the pattern and has since closed her shop. I love the way the cardigan looks in this fabric even better than the dress, however. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Can you see the Ravenell Bridge in the corner? We took these pictures at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park. Please note: pansies <u><i>were</i></u> harmed in this photoshoot. Ripping their flowers off is just par for the course. They'll be fine. Anyway, it will just encourage them to grow their leaves a little bigger before they bloom again.</div>

These are Cici's first pictures in big girl jeans. I think I might cry, she looks so big! I love this crazy little chatterbox!</div>

This past week I tested for the <a href="http://www.peekaboopatternshop.com/rosemary-raglan/?aff=287">Rosemary Raglan</a>* by Peekaboo Pattern Shop. The Rosemary is a form-fitting tee with options for a dropped peplum tunic or a hood and different sleeve lengths. I made the option with the peplum and hood with a 3/4 length sleeve. It can together really quickly and would make a great beginner knit project!</div>

I chose to use coordinating Birth Interlock knits from my stash. The inside of the hood is cut from one of my old tank tops. The Birch fabric has 25% stretch but the pattern calls for at least 30%, so I sized up one. I really like the fit on my daughter!<br />

My serger was in the shop so I actually used my sewing machine for this entire project. My sewing machine and I haven't been on the best terms lately. The tension is a little messed up, but I fiddled with the tension dial and now it seems ok. I still think the timing is messed up. Guess I need to take it into the shop soon, as well. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy New Year everyone! I made another <a href="http://www.heyjunehandmade.com/product/lane-raglan/?affiliates=52">Lane Raglan</a>* by Hey June Patterns. This pattern comes with a scoop neck, but I was in the mood for a v-neck, so I drafted the new neckline. It was surprisingly easy! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I kept the neckline the same in the back. The picture below shows my front bodice pattern piece as is for a scoop neck. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--HdNchiwdg0/WGqk4063dMI/AAAAAAAAJ9M/xNVyB7n74qIwTOPyvJ0kn1jTCc-0ADDUQCEw/s1600/IMG_0015%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--HdNchiwdg0/WGqk4063dMI/AAAAAAAAJ9M/xNVyB7n74qIwTOPyvJ0kn1jTCc-0ADDUQCEw/s400/IMG_0015%2B2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The picture below shows how I folded the neckline down to create my V-neck. Just ignore all my scribbles and math, though seriously, it's a good way to keep track of things!<br />
<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "abel"; font-size: 16px;">{This post contains affiliate links, indicated by an asterisk*. Please refer to ‘About’ in the top menu for more info.}</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fgwp2Xpzuxo/WGqk4zN3R9I/AAAAAAAAJ9I/_x3V1Uw4c005zITAbAhl_J0VK4M-klzIgCEw/s1600/IMG_0013%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fgwp2Xpzuxo/WGqk4zN3R9I/AAAAAAAAJ9I/_x3V1Uw4c005zITAbAhl_J0VK4M-klzIgCEw/s400/IMG_0013%2B2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Calculating the neckband length is the same as it would be for a scoop neck:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: #274e13;">Neckline circumference at the seam line x 0.85 = Neckband length</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Of course, you would add your seam allowance to your neckband length plus extra length so you can create the tails. This <a href="https://oliverands.com/community/blog/2015/06/v-neck-metro-t-shirt-tutorial.html">great tutorial</a> by Oliver + S explains how to make the 'chevron' on the neckband. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used Adrianna's excellent <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXndr89juto">v-neck video tutorial</a> and my neckline looks pretty good! Not perfect, but definitely wearable. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-alZ6kqEZ5OI/WGqk49M_wNI/AAAAAAAAJ9E/MaIXpcgGVd0FGfD4JhiNXnurm7OdE9xzgCEw/s1600/IMG_0006%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-alZ6kqEZ5OI/WGqk49M_wNI/AAAAAAAAJ9E/MaIXpcgGVd0FGfD4JhiNXnurm7OdE9xzgCEw/s640/IMG_0006%2B2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used some of the performance brushed poly I got from Zenith & Quasar's Black Friday sale to make this shirt. I had originally planned on it being strictly a workout shirt, but it turned out so cute I might have to wear it out for a casual date night! I didn't have enough fabric to cut the entire back piece in one piece, so I made a seam at my waistline and added a bit of gathering at the center. (I added 1.5 inches of width to the lower back bodice piece at center back.) So if anyone asks, this was completely intentional. Got it?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rUoXbxTpRLw/WGqk5bd9xaI/AAAAAAAAJ9Q/I2btJeEtsKA59Tjpdz_xmIWvnJ1UisM8ACEw/s1600/IMG_9991%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rUoXbxTpRLw/WGqk5bd9xaI/AAAAAAAAJ9Q/I2btJeEtsKA59Tjpdz_xmIWvnJ1UisM8ACEw/s640/IMG_9991%2B2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I shortened the sleeves A LOT and hemmed them right below the armscye. I love the coverstitch detail at the shoulder seams. Definitely one of my favorite makes of 2016! (Even though I technically finished the neckline yesterday.)</div>
